POLIO ERADICATION – The Geneseo Rotary Club has given over $6,000.00 since 1985 to Rotary International when it launched its eradication program. It was estimated at that time to be 350,000 new cases of polio in 125 countries. In 2007, Rotary has reduced these cases by 99% thanks to our financial support and the many Rotary volunteers.

Rotary International announced a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on November 26, 2007 that will inject a much needed $200 million global effort to eradicate polio

The Rotary Foundation received a $100 million Gates Foundation challenge grant, which Rotary will raise funds to match, dollar for dollar, over three years. Rotary will spend the initial $100 million within one year in direct support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, spearheaded by the World Health Organization ( WHO ), Rotary International, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ), and UNICEF.

To date, the GENESEO ROTARY CLUB has donated $1,000.00 to this challenge grant with one year remaining.

SHELTER BOX PROGRAM – Since the inception in 2000 by an English Rotarian, ShelterBox has responded to more than 75 disasters in over 50 countries around the world, including Hurricane Katrina in the United States in 2005. Some others are: Myanmar-cyclone, China-earthquake, Bangladesh-cyclone, Pakistan-earthquake, India, Sri Lanka & Indonesia-Tsunami, Java-earthquake and Millions in Africa for Humanitarian crises. Now, shelterboxes will be sent to Haiti for their earthquake aid.

WHAT IS A SHELTERBOX?  It provides shelter, warmth, and comfort to the survivors of natural and manmade crises. It consists of  a weatherproof ten-person tent and other survival essentials such as: thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, mosquito nets, multi-fuel stove and cooking utensils, water containers & water purification kits, basic tool kit, children activity kit, and more. What’s even better is that Rotary has them built and ready to be distributed by Rotary Shelter Box Response Teams.

GENESEO ROTARY CLUB has donated to ShelterBox in the past and is working on a new initiative.
